Overview

DRV10983PWP is a motor driver integrated circuit (IC) manufactured by Texas Instruments. It is designed to drive brushless DC motors in various applications such as fans, pumps, and small appliances. The DRV10983PWP includes features like sensorless commutation, adjustable speed control, protection against overtemperature and overcurrent conditions, and low-voltage operation. It operates from a single power supply voltage and uses a pulse-width modulation (PWM) input signal to control the motor speed.

It can provide continuous drive current up to 2 A. The device is specifically designed for cost sensitive, low noise, low-external-component-count applications.

DRV10983PWP Description

The DRV10983 device uses a proprietary sensorless control scheme to provide continuous sinusoidal drive, which significantly reduces the pure tone acoustics that typically occur as a result of commutation. The interface to the device is designed to be simple and flexible. The motor can be controlled directly through PWM, analog, or I²C inputs. Motor speed feedback is available through either the FG pin or I²C.

The DRV10983 device is a three-phase sensorless motor driver with integrated power MOSFETs, which can provide continuous drive current up to 2 A. The device is specifically designed for cost sensitive, lownoise, low-external-component-count applications.

The DRV10983 device features an integrated stepdown regulator to efficiently step down the supply voltage to either 5 or 3.3 V for powering both internal and external circuits. The device is available in either a sleep mode or a standby mode version to conserve power when the motor is not running. The standby mode (3-mA) version leaves the regulator running and the sleep mode (180-µA) version shuts it off. Use the standby mode version in applications where the regulator is used to power an external microcontroller.

DRV10983PWP Details

The chip uses a three-phase sinusoidal drive algorithm to commutate the motor, eliminating the need for Hall-effect sensors or other rotor position feedback.

It includes a differential amplifier that can be used to measure the back electromotive force (EMF) of the motor and estimate the rotor position.

The device has a wide operating voltage range of 3.3V to 24V, making it suitable for battery-powered applications as well as industrial and automotive systems.

The adjustable speed control is achieved through the use of a PWM signal with a frequency range of up to 100kHz.

The DRV10983PWP has built-in protection features such as overtemperature and overcurrent shutdown, stall detection, and undervoltage lockout.

The IC comes in a small-footprint, thermally-enhanced HTSSOP package, making it easy to incorporate into space-constrained designs.
